"In 1974, when Sakharov indulged in this imaginative exercise in futurology, progress was not just a matter of science and technology. It also required a healthy respect for nature and a commitment to preserving it. Toward this end, Sakharov predicted that by 2040 any productive activity that could pollute or otherwise damage the earth’s atmosphere would be carried out in “flying cities” (really satellites circling the earth), where pollutants could be dispensed with safely. In agriculture, not only would the Green Revolution by 2024 have produced artificial soil that was “superfertile” in comparison with the best soils of 1974, but because extraterrestrial travel would be commonplace, food would be extracted from whatever was edible on other planets of the solar system as well as from bacteria and algae on earth.
